Johannesburg played host in mid-2002 to the biggest-ever conference on this continent, the UN-sponsored World Summit on Sustainable Development. Thousands of delegates, including heads of state, descended on the city for two frenetic weeks of discussions and seminars. While there was some ambivalence about the long-term impact of the conference itself, there was little doubt that it proved a huge success for Johannesburg, which:
- Made substantial improvements to infrastructure to accommodate the delegates
- Invested in a wide range of "sustainable" projects
- Put on plenty of entertainment for delegates
- Managed to host vast crowds without a single serious "incident"
