JUST A CLICK OF A BUTTON AWAY
With just a click of the computer button, Jozi library users will soon be able to access the entire library stock of any service point in the City of Johannesburg.
Formerly, library services operated on the three different computer systems namely, LIBRIS, ERUDITE and URICA. This system made it difficult for library practitioners and library users alike, firstly, not to be able to trace the location of a particular book or take advantage of the book stock of other libraries. There was a great need to integrate the systems in order to accelerate library operations and circulation as well as fast-tracking access to information. URICA was chosen as the most functional and cost effective computer system. The benefits are many
Four phases were identified to complete this process:
(1) Phase one: LIBRIS conversion (former Sandton libraries) to URICA was completed towards the end of 2001
(2) Phase two: ERUDITE conversion (former Randburg libraries) to URICA
is due for completion towards the end of 2002 (3) Phase three: ERUDITE conversion (former Roodepoort libraries) to URICA
is due for completion towards the end of 2002 (4) Phase four: ERUDITE conversion (former midrand libraries) to URICA due for completion by the end of June 2003
It is envisaged that by July 2003, the manual conversion and linking of holdings of an estimated 127 600 non-computerised book stock at a further 12 libraries from disadvantaged communities will be effected. Libraries include Diepkloof Zone 1, Dobsonville, Ivory Park, Klipspruit Children's Library, Meadowlands and Protea Glen.
