UPGRADING OF MEMORIALS

Joburg has allocated R400 000 towards the refurbishment and development of the Diepkloof and National Anglo Boer War Memorials.

The upgrading of the Diepkloof Memorial in Diepkloof Zone 2 Park , will include the revamping of the monument stone, erection of signage, paving of the surrounding area as well as other developments in consultation with the local community.

It is intended that the memorial be developed as a tourist attraction as part of the Soweto Struggle Route. The memorial was erected by the ANC Youth League in 1992 in memory of local activists who died in the anti-apartheid struggle during the 1980s.

The National Anglo-Boer War Memorial in Saxonwold on the other hand, has suffered serious structural damage over the years. An investigation has revealed that the monument is constructed over a dyke which has slowly led to its deterioration. The monument will be underpinned to provide support and storm-water drainage facilities around the structure to reduce soil moisture.

The memorial was rededicated in 1999 to the memory of all those women, men and children of all races who lost their lives during the South African War of 1899-1902. It is Joburg's premier war memorial, a site of national significance for which the City is responsible.
