Press Release

Mayoral Committee Road Show on 5 June 2003

Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Amos Masondo embarks on a Road Show in Region 4 of the City of Johannesburg this Thursday 5 June 2003.

This important Road Show comes immediately after the Mayor unveiled his exciting 2003/4 Budget Speech of R13 billion for the Johannesburg Local Government.

Taken together with a capital expenditure budget of R1.1-billion, the Mayor pointed out to an "annual investment in the city" of over R14-billion".

Region 4 is divided into 9 (nine) Wards with 9 Ward Councillors and 10 PR (Proportional Representation) Councillors with a population of 198 000. The Region has 14 libraries, 10 clinics, 15 recreation centres, 16 swimming pools, Botanical Gardens and The heritage sight of Melville Koppies.

The Road Show will culminate in a public meeting in which the public can ask questions later at the end of the tour at 18h00 in which the Mayor and the Council will engage residents of Region 4 to find out their needs at the Danie Van Zyl Recreation Centre.

This tour is part of the Mayor's commitment to check on the status of each area under the City of Johannesburg each year, with a view to collecting opinions and giving feedback, in an effort to encourage public ownership of the projects and facilities in the Region.

Mayor Masondo will visit urban agricultural, housing, health, educational and community driven projects as well as informal settlements to view progress in delivery of basic services, economic growth and development and improvement and/or challenges under which people live (see programme below).

The Road Show is to emphasise that all citizens are active participants in changing their lives for the better, by engaging a speedier way to implement the programme to build a better life for all.
