COUNCIL ADOPTS CITY'S BY- LAWS
Council today adopted a revised set of by-laws for the City of Johannesburg drafted earlier this year.
The complete set of by-laws cover various local government issues such as public roads and miscellaneous, parking grounds, public open spaces, street trading, public health, cemeteries and crematoria, emergency services, culture and recreation services, and encroachment on property.
These by-laws have taken into account views of citizens raised following an extensive public participation process. The process encouraged participation by various stakeholders including political parties and several interest groups during the drafting process.
Johannesburg residents were invited to send in written submissions and three public hearings were held with residents associations, Civic organisations and political parties.
These by-laws will only be effective after promulgation and publication of the Provincial Gazette. Council is also in a process of establishing a municipal court to deal with all cases of by-law infringements in the area of Jurisdiction.
