Press Release

84th Remembrance Sunday Commemorations at the Cenotaph, in Johannesburg

Does this auspicious occasion marking the 84th Remembrance Sunday ring a bell by bringing back old memories or assist in the reminiscence of the past?

For the many, who remember the monumental Remembrance Sunday or Armistice Day (which it is occasionally referred to), it should resurrect memories of those Samaritans that had lost their lives in war (i.e. World War 1 & World War 2) and recognize the many who contributed towards establishing a democratic order, in South Africa.

The National Remembrance Sunday service will be hosted in Johannesburg, as the main event, on Sunday 14 November 2004, from 14:00 onwards under the benefaction of the Executive Mayor, Amos Masondo.

Comparable to Britain and other countries observing this memorable day, which takes place on the Sunday, closest to the 11 November, it is scheduled to take place both nationally and internationally, on the 14 November 2004. Red poppies are worn on the lapel as a symbol of this memorable occasion.

The commemorative service will include a parade past the Cenotaph. The procession will be followed by a special religious service led by leaders of a number of pious denominations as well as a colourful wreath laying ceremony to mark the special annual occasion.

The observance is a collaborative effort that includes the integrated South African Defence Force, The South African Police Service, veterans of the underground armies of Umkhonto weSizwe, the Azanian People's Liberation Army and the Military Veterans who generally takes the lead in the commemorations of the solemn occasion. This event is closely coordinated with local government officials from the City of Johannesburg. Various church organizations have been invited to participate in the proceedings of the day.

The ceremonial proceeding will be graced by senior dignitaries and civil servants from National, Provincial and Local government and other orders in South Africa.

The service is closely associated to a wreath laying initiative with approximately 100 senior SANDF members, civic dignitaries, civilian's, ex service organizations including MK and Apla veterans.

The public who attend are at liberty to place single flowers as a mark of respect on this somber occasion.

This service contributes and serves towards a theme of reconciliation and unification in South Africa.
