11 May 2004 Press Release City of Johannesburg postpones the Conferment of the Freedom of the City to Mr N. Mandela The City of Johannesburg is keen to confer the freedom of the City to Mr Nelson Mandela, but there is a greater responsibility at this particular time for Mr Mandela to be part of the delegation that will represent South Africa at the FA 2010 Soccer Bid in Zurich on Saturday 15 May 2004. The Wednesday the 12 May 2004 Media Briefing and the conferment on the 14 May 2004 has therefore been postponed. The people and the City of Johannesburg understand the importance of the 2010 Soccer bid to the country as a whole and we are certain we will have the honour to bestow the freedom of the city to Mr Nelson Mandela in the near future at a date to be agreed upon with the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
