Mayoral visit to region 11 - Lenasia, Ennnerdale and Orange Farm
The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Amos Masondo will tomorrow visit region eleven Lenasia Ennerdale and Orange Farmm. The purpose of the visit is to improve the interaction between council and the community it serves. Based on the principle of 'Batho Pele' the visit seeks to enhance public participation in governance issues.
Among other places and projects to be visited by the Executive Mayor, his cabinet and the city's senior management, are:
Johannesburg Council for the Disabled (JOCOD)
The organisation was founded in 1993 to empower and develop people with disabilities through skills development, employment and career opportunities, literacy and numeracy skills etc. Through hard work and dedication the organization established first sheds for the Hydro-ponic farming of vegetables and fruits. JOCOD was selected by the Department of Agriculture to give training to future farmers in the area.
Thembelihle Farmers Agricultural Project (Olifantsvlei)
The farm, which started operating in June 2003, is situated at the Olifantsvlei Primay School and act as a future-farming pilot for school children.
Vlakfontein Ext 1.2.3 and Vlakfontein Ext West
These are sites for the city's housing development project, which commenced in the year 2000. The sites were earmarked to accommodate families to be relocated from areas such as Thembelihle, Bushkoppies, Drill Hall, Transport House, Dlamini Camp and Eikenhoff.
Finetown
The City of Johannesburg has since the year 2000 embarked on various projects such as the installation of essential services, regulation of tenants etc. Residents are currently being afforded an opportunity to apply for housing subsidies.
Lakeside Ext2
The area consists of 3000 RDP houses characterized by poor construction and other houses are built below the 150 year floodline. The areea was recently hit by a disaster, which seriously damaged houses during the 19 21 January 2004 floods.
NGOO Village
This is one of the most exciting projects in the region, which seeks to develop a village to house non-governmental organizations working together with the city's social services in finding solutions to complex human challenges in the region.
Poortjie
This is a semi-formal township of 986 382ha of farmland. Within the area there is an informal settlement known as Dark-City where the City is providing essential services and there are plans underway to upgrade the area.
This Roadshow will culminate into a public meeting scheduled to commence at 17h00 on Wednesday 11 February 2004. This meeting, which will be address by the mayor and his mayoral committee, will be held at Lenasia Civic Centre.
