Press Release
Joburg women bike squad launched
Today the city of Johannesburg launched a women's only bike unit 'Special Patrol Unit Charlie Group' to actively parrticipate in crime prevention activities around Johannesburg.
The unit, which comprise of 21 metropolitan police officers was selected from the 42 female officers, a structure thought to be the only one of its kind in the country. This is as a result of a decision taken by the JMPD management in August 2003 to re-introduce motorcycles as part of an effort to improve service delivery and enhance public safety in the City of Johannesburg.
The unit comes in handy to fill the gap where regular vehicles cannot operate by easily manoeuvring especially during peak periods in the city.
The launch was timed to coincide with various activities recognising the role played by women in the society. This also clearly demonstrates the JMPD's commitment to placing itself at the centre of gender emancipation and ensuring that women play a meaningful role in policing matters.
South Africa and the rest of the world are facing a critical challenge to empower women and contribute to gender equality. All spheres of the South African government are increasing the pace in the fight against any form of discrimination on the basis of race and gender.
The Special Patrol Unit Charlie Group is a practical plan to achievve the City's strategic goal of creating a World Class African City that reduces lawlessness, lack of safety and environmental health.
