26 August 2004 Press Release LAUNCH OF MUNICIPAL COURT FOR JOHANNESBURG The City of Johannesburg invites members of the media to a launch of the Municipal Court for Johannesburg on Friday, 27 August 2004 You may be aware that the City and the Department of Justice have been working together to establish the first Municipal Court in Johannesburg. During this process, the City also embarked on the review and re-drafting of most of its by-laws. Twelve new sets of by-laws were promulgated on 21 May 2004-08-26 The Municipal Court will concentrate on hearing municipal offences in terms of the City's by-laws and National and Provincial Legislation enforced by Local Government. Examples of the latter are the National Building Regulations and Standards Act and the Town Planning Ordinance. The Municipal Court will be an ordinary Magistrate Court under the jurisdiction of the Chief Magistrate of Johannesburg. The Court will be located at Court 35 at the Johannesburg Magistrate Court in Fox Street, Johannesburg. The City has recently, with the permission of the Department of Justice, employed a prosecutor of this Court and will also provide the administrative staff required by the Court. The Chief Magistrate of Johannesburg will allocate the Magistrate presiding in the Court. We expect that the existence of this Court would go a long way in assisting the City to achieve its goal of effective law enforcement. The launch is scheduled for the foyer, Court 35, Johannesburg Magistrate Court, Fox Street, Johannesburg, at 11:00. Secure parking is available in Fox Street, between West and Bezuidenhout Streets.
