Press Release

Carnival Summit initiates Gauteng's Heritage Celebrations

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and City of Joburg's Art, Culture and Heritage Service is jointly hosting a Carnival Summit on the 27 August 2004. The Summit will provide a platform for all performing arts and cultural performers to convene, network, lobby and showcase their talents and skills at the MuseuMAfrica Carnival Summit.

The main purpose of the Carnival Summit is to audit the existing carnival arts and cultural skills currently available in Johannesburg and in the surrounding areas. It will further identify other talents or skill shortages required to showcase a world class Carnival event. The Summit will assist the City of Joburg and the Gauteng Provincial Government to create a specific 'Carnival' brand, by working with different regions in the Province. The proposed Carnival brand will ultimately attract thousands of local and international participants to Johannesburg.

Resolutions of the Summit will serve to create and develop a unique database of talent available in the City of Johannesburg. Spectators are welcome to attend the culmination of a mini carnival with a festival of colour, music and dance at 18:00hrs at MuseuMAfrica, on the 27 August 2004.

A press conference to launch Gauteng's Heritage Month celebrations will be held at the MuseuMAfrica at 10:30hrs.

Issued jointly by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and the City of Joburg.
