Press Release

JOBURG AND THE INFORMAL TRADERS ASSOCIATIONS ARE IN AGREEMENT

The City of Johannesburg and the Informal traders association today (Monday 09 December 2002) reached consensus on a number of issues at a meeting which was attended by representatives from the City of Johannesburg, Informal Business Forum and ACHIB.

The meeting paved the way for the implementation of the Informal Trading Development Programme. The main objectives of this programme are to manage the impact of informal trading on the city's infrastructure and to help develop a vibrant and diverse trading sector.

Clr Cowan told the meeting that Council has no intention to move people to areas, which are not economically viable. The City of Johannesburg will be conducting a spatial audit to identify suitable areas for trading and markets will be developed in those areas for informal trading.

During a meeting held at the Metro Centre today, all stakeholders committed themselves to working together in the best interest of all citizens of Johannesburg. Among issues discussed at the meeting were concerns about litter in trading areas and a need to continue with by-law enforcement. "Where by-laws are being contravened there will be enforcement," said Councillor Sol Cowan.

Some discussion was held about concerns from the IBF about enforcement of the by-laws and other pieces of legislation affecting the numbers. Councillor Cowan clarified the mandate of the forum as being able to deal with matters relating to informal trading.

Discussions were also held about allegations of theft and corruption and Clr Cowan encouraged traders to report all allegations of theft and corruption involving the members of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department to the authorities so that they can be investigated and necessary action to be taken.
