Jo'burg Unleashes a
Further 100 Police Officers onto the City streets
On Friday July 5,
the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department will
unleash 108 newly
qualified police officers to the city's regional offices,
as well as to
specialised units such as the canine unit, equestrian unit,
Freeway patrol
unit, surface, foot as well as the bicycle unit immediately
after the pass
out parade be held earlier in the morning.
The officers were trained
at the City's own Metro Police Department
Training Academy one of the
top training academies in the land. Amongst the
newly qualified officers will
be a group from Mogale City and Secunda
traffic departments who were also
trained at the Jo'burg academy.
Johannesburg Member of Mayoral committee of
public Safety Strike Ralegoma
will address the new recruits at 9am. The
parade will be held at the Mary
Fitzgerald Square next to the Market Theatre,
in Newtown.
With only one year and a few months in operation, the
Metro police together
with other law enforcement agencies have recorded a
significant amount of
successes in their crime reduction activities in the
inner City. They have
also improved the traffic fines payment rates from
about 28% to just over
50%. They have also arrested over 20000 motorists and
other road users for
unpaid fines that have now turned into warrants of
arrest.
This latest release of force is a further indication of the
City's
determination to rid itself of crime.
As the JMPD we would
like to assure the public out-there that we have clear
crime combating
strategies in place that we aim to unveil during the first
week of August.
The numbers of Metro police officers patrolling the City
streets is growing
in line with the Executive Mayors commitment to build a
formidable force of
about 4000 officers in the next few years.
The passing out parade of
these officers will take place on Friday, July 5
from 09h00 at the Mary
Fitzgerald Square.
