City anger at police killing

The  City  of  Johannesburg today said it was angered by the slaying of the
City's  police  officer  in Eldorado Park, South of Johannesburg last night
and  has  vowed that no stone will be left unturned until those responsible
are brought to book.

A  Johannesburg  Metro  Police  officer,  Sergeant  Gregory Lackay (40), is
believed  to  have  being  shot twice in the head through the window of his
vehicle  by  an  unknown  assailant at around 7:30 last night on the Golden
high way in Eldorado Park and he died instantly.

According  to  an  eyewitness,  a motorist whom the officer had just issued
with  a  ticket,  two men passed him and then went to the officer's vehicle
and opened fire without any exchange of words. The men, an assailant and an
accomplice then fled on foot.

Meanwhile, the South African Police Services (SAPS) who said the motive for
the  murder  was still unknown, have appealed to a woman eyewitness who was
spotted  on  the scene or anybody with information to contact investigating
officers  Inspector  MS  Matladi  on 082 809 1793 or JR Mahlatsi on 082 559
3861.

"We  find  it  utterly deplorable that there would be someone out there who
would  want  to kill police officers when these officers work selflessly to
ensure  the  safety  of others," Johannesburg City Manger Pascal Moloi said
adding that the community of Eldorado Park should assist officers to ensure
that suspects are arrested soonest.

"At this hour of sadness, on behalf of the City of Johannesburg we send our
deepest  condolences  to  the  Lackay family and we assure them and all the
residents  of  Johannesburg that this hideous crime will not go unpunished.
When  so  much progress is being made in the fight against crime, we simply
cannot afford the killing of police officers," said City Manager

ENDS.
