Subject: press release on SAMWU
strike
Media Release Monday July 1, 2002

News Editors/PR Wires

Johannesburg

Johannesburg
prepared for a four day national strike
The City of Johannesburg is
readying itself for a four-day national strike
by SAMWU members, starting 2
July till Friday, 5 July 2002.
At the first round of talks in April this
year between the SALGA and the
union, the parties deadlocked following SAMWU
and IMATU's refusal to accept
the employer's offer of 7% wage increase in
year 1 of a multi-year increase
agreement.
In terms of the offer,
salary increase negotiations would be based on a
three-year deal by which the
respective parties would jointly agree on an
acceptable pay percentage
increase, to be followed by an adjustment in the
next two
years.
Subsequently, SALGA and IMATU have come to agreement on accepting
the
mediator's proposal on an 8% increase, which is to be implemented for
all
Council employees below the level of municipal managers.
Despite
efforts to resolve the dispute over the last few months Council has
noted,
with regret, SAMWU's intention to strike. Council is making
every
effort to ensure that there will be minimum interruptions to
public
services for the duration of the strike. With regard to
essential
services, they remain unaffected by the strike in terms of the
Labour
Relations Act.
The Council has adopted the following approach
with regard to the strike:
· Contingency plans
are being put in place to ensure minimal disruption
to
services
· The Policy of "No work no pay" will
apply
· There will be strict monitoring of attendance
and intimidation
· No leave will be granted during
this period
· Disciplinary action will be taken
against any form of
deliberate
misconduct
