Summit demonstrations


The   Johannesburg   Metro   Police   Department  (JMPD)  has  received  17
applications  from  local  organisations to stage demonstrations during the
World  Summit  on  Sustainable  development  (WSSD)  in accordance with the
regulations of the Gatherings Act.


All  applications  were  objectively considered following negotiations with
respective  applicants taking into account the rights of other individuals,
business, delegates and heads of states.


It  is  agreed  that  Social  Movements  Indaba  and the WSSD Civil Society
Management  will  be  allowed to use similar routes from Alexandra with the
following conditions:
      Social  Movements Indaba will depart at 10h00 from East Bank at Bheki
      Langa  High  School,  and  lead  the  Civil  Society  Management by 2
      kilometres and
      Civil  Society  Management  will  depart at 12h00 noon from Alexandra
      Stadium;
      Usage of N1 Grayston interchange is not allowed;
      The  9  kilometres march will be from Alexandra; through Old Pretoria
      Highway on to Marlboro Avenue to Catherine Avenue down Alice Lane and
      stop  at  the  speakers  corner  at Alice Lane and 5(superscript: th)
      Street; and
      Will provide 1 clearly identifiable Marshall per 10 persons


"We  can  announce  today that all applications received for the march have
been approved, following consultations with the organizers of the marches,"
;  asserts  Mayor Amos Masondo. The aim is to mange the demonstrations in a
manner  that  will  not compromise security concerns, whilst also affording
responsible demonstrations to take place.
