JOURNOS TOURS GO ECO
The third of the on-going Joburg media tours
will tomorrow (Thursday August
29) bare all the indigenous South African
culture with a lot of emphasis on
sustainable ecological heritage to
journalists covering the World Summit on
Sustainable
Development.
The tour party departing from Ubuntu Village, in North
Street close to gate
3 at 9am will visit heritage
sites featuring the Greenhouse Project- an
eco-centre situated in
Joubert Park. The project emphasises recycling and
its focal
point is multi-stakeholder initiative for urban renewal in
the
inner city. The Greenhouse
aims to contribute positively to
the
regeneration of the Inner City and help challenge some of the
assumptions
around urban green spaces through urban food
gardening projects and green
technologies that put the control
and quality of the service in the hands
of the user.
Another
marvel on site is the 100-year old Victorian house currently
under
renovation, which will be used for offices and
permaculture activities.
Landscaping has "greened"
the area and ongoing environmental education
through information
sharing, training and development has visible fruition.
Also
in the line up will be the Johannesburg Art City project
that has
turned downtown Joburg into the biggest outdoor art
gallery in the world!
On display here are giant reproductions of
original works by South African
artists. Leading
contemporary art by South Africans has been on display
since
August 2002 and this will go on until March 2003.
The project has two
objectives: to promote South African art and artists to
the
public and to showcase the numerous urban renewal projects
that are
currently underway in the inner city
such as Constitution Hill, Nelson
Mandela Bridge, the
revamped Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Ghandi
Square in CBD,
Metromarket and the Fashion
District.
ENDS.
