Joburg's EcoCity is world's tops

An  international  publication  associated with the 2002 Johannesburg World
Summit on Sustainable Development rated the city's EcoCity Initiative among
top ten local government case studies from around the world.

The new publication, Local Strategies for Accelerating Sustainability: Case
Studies  of  Local Government Success, said EcoCity was selected as a model
for  accelerating  the  transition  to  sustainable  communities and cities
because  of a partnership between the City of Johannesburg, the local group
EcoCity Trust and the community.

The  publication  further  said  EcoCity  was best in promoting sustainable
economic  growth  while  respecting environmental principles and developing
local capacity.

"A  number  of  community-run cooperatives have been established to provide
employment  opportunities  and  contribute to a more sustainable community.
This  shows  that  over  the  last ten years, Johannesburg and thousands of
other cities in the world were committed to sustainable development," Local
Strategies   for   Accelerating   Sustainability:  Case  Studies  of  Local
Government Success said.
