Free tours Joburg style go to Alex
The City of Johannesburg will
tomorrow (28 August 2002) take members of the
media covering the World Summit
on Sustainable development on two free tour
packages to experience
Johannesburg.
The morning tour, departing from Ubuntu Village, in
North Street close to
gate 3 at 9am will head for the Alexandra Township.
There delegates will
visit Altrek Centre where an exhibition on the history
of Alexandra is on
display and Jukskei River, which is one of the City's best
practice
projects. The river can easily hold its own as an environmental
marvel.
The tour will then proceed to the Reconstruction Area,
Iphuteng Primary
cluster and the Riverpark. These projects will expose
delegates to the
densification challenges in Alexandra and the demonstrate
initiatives
undertaken to address these challenges. The tour will then head
towards
Newtown for the Newtown Inner city Housing project: Carr
Gardens.
The second tour which leaves from the same place (Ubuntu
Village) to
Lilieslief Farm- a sanctuary of struggle leaders such as Nelson
Mandela,
Walter Sisulu etc. The bus will then proceed to the Midrand Ecocity,
which
is rated among the top ten community sustainable development initiative
in
the World.
