Joburg auditors are world class!
City of Johannesburg
Director of Internal Audit Greg Hollyman is the best
Internal Auditor in the
World!
And his peers agree. Hollyman
last week was awarded the Institute of
Internal Auditors of South
Africa's (IIASA) prestigious Internal Auditor of
the Year Award.
The award made him the first person in the public service
to receive the
honour.
Congratulating him today, City Manager
Pascal Moloi said he was proud to
see that city officials
were daily actualising the vision of the City of
being a world Class African
City.
"Greg and his department made Johannesburg
the first institution to have
its internal audit
function undergo an International Internal
Audit's
Quality Assurance Review in both the private
and public sector in South
Africa and only the third local
government in the world outside the USA.
This is the highest possible rating
in the practice of internal auditing.
"These achievements are a
guarantee to the people of Johannesburg, that the
City
is serious about service
delivery excellence and efficient
governance",
said Moloi, adding that Hollyman achieved all this
whilst
faced with the budgetary constraints typical in public
service.
A week before Hollyman walked to the podium last Monday to
claim his prize,
23 revenue department officials
were suspended on suspicion of fraud
involving
shady journal entries. The latest suspensions, a product of
a
regular internal audit by his team brings to 69 the
number of officials
suspended since last year and accounts for several
millions of Rands in the
potential loss of revenue for the
City.
Hollyman, 33, was today quick to point out that his department
was involved
in more than running after the bad guys: "We are here to
identify high risk
areas and to put in place appropriate audit
systems that will ensure that
we manage our risks
better and in the process save money for the people
Johannesburg," he
said.
Only 18 months with the City, he has made
significant improvements in the
Internal Audit Department. The previously
segmented department comprised of
6 different entities but
has now been streamlined into a single division
with three
sections dealing with internal audit, computer and
forensic
audit.
Hollyman, who described
his brief as "to transform the city's internal
audit function
into a world class internal audit function," left a job that
could
see him as a partner in leading company so that "I
could make a
difference in the lives of the people of
Johannesburg".
