MEDIA RELEASE
7 November 2006
Diepsloot to get driving rangeThe City plans to establish a development driving range and educational facility near Diepsloot in the north of Johannesburg sometime in 2007.
Using revenue generated from sponsors of the Joburg Open, a professional golf tournament to be held over the next three years, the new range will offer school children and members of the community regular coaching sessions.
Those who show talent and persist with their training will receive free second hand golf equipment and eventually club membership.
The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Councillor Amos Masondo, an avid golfer himself says" The intention is to dispel perceptions that golf is only for the privileged few by creating this facility that will provide young Black matriculants with SETA training in golf club management".
He says," To show our commitment, the City will provide several hectares of land for the development of this facility".
The prize giving ceremony for the Joburg Open is planned to take place near the proposed development.
