MEDIA RELEASE
6 November 2006
Remembrance Sunday - Tribute to police killed in actionThe 86th National Remembrance Sunday Service will be held on 12 November 2006 at the Cenotaph in Harrison Street, in Johannesburg starting at 14h00. The Remembrance Sunday Service contributes to unification and nation-building in South Africa. The service honours all South Africans who made the supreme sacrifice for their country in wars and conflict including the struggle for democracy.
Special tribute will be paid on Remembrance Sunday to members of the police killed on official duty. Loss of life by South African Police Services (SAPS) personnel has been raised as a matter of public concern, and attention was focused on the shooting of four policemen in Jeppestown in June this year.
Other participants include the South African Defence Force, Freedom Regiments of the City of Johannesburg, and military veterans including the Military Veterans' Associations (MVA's) of Umkhonto we Size and the Azanian Peoples' Liberation Army. Also prominent are members of the diplomatic Corps who will be there to pay their respects.
An inter-faith religious service is led by representatives of different religious communities reflecting the diversity of South Africa. This year, for the first time, the Chief Rabbi of South Africa has been invited to lead the religious service.
The inter-faith nature of the religious service will be respected, with emphasis on universal values shared by the major religions. Responsibility for leading the service will in future years be rotated in consultation with the South African Council of Churches or relevant religious body.
It is traditional on Remembrance Sunday to wear a red poppy in commemoration of the fallen from the World War 1, because poppies bloomed in the trenches and crators of some of the worst battlefields of that terrible conflict.
