Johannesburg Water to upgrade sewer line

Johannesburg Water, the water and sanitation service provider for the City of Joburg has plans to upgrade the existing sewer pipeline in the vicinity of Robyn Street in Jukskei Park

This project is the result of ongoing sewer overflows due to the sewer network not having sufficient capacity in certain lines. Work on the upgrading of these lines is due to start at the end of May 2006, and will ensure a more reliable service to residents in the affected areas.

Johannesburg Water asks for the patience of the affected residents as it attempts to improve services in the area. Johannesburg Water remains committed to its objective of providing and improving efficient uninterrupted service delivery to residents.

With regards to the continuous reports of a strong sewer smell in the Olivenhout Spruit, sewer blockages had been found upstream of the problem area and cleared as soon as they were located. The blockages were mostly found by a proactive JW teams and a substantial amount of sand and rubble were removed from the sewers. These blockages could be attributed to the dense development in the area.

Johannesburg Water has in the past taken samples of the river quality at the Hyperion Road crossing. The samples taken showed the E.coli counts were within the good range as per the City of Johannesburg's Jukskei Water Quality Index.

Johannesburg Water will continue to do proactive sewer patrols in the area and monitor the situation. Residents should report sewer and water related problems to JW's 24-hour call centre 688 1500
