PRESS RELEASES

3 March 2006

Removal of election posters

Now that elections are over, the City of Johannesburg would like to remind all participating parties to remove their campaigning posters from various poles, walls and fences to contribute in the City’s “keep the City clean” campaign.

In terms of the City’s Outdoor Advertising Bylaws parties have up to 14 days after the elections to remove posters.

Posters that still remain on display after the 14 days will be regarded as transgressing City laws and be removed by Council workers at a fee. The cost of such removal will be borne by the responsible party in terms of Clause 33 (3) of the Bylaws.

The provisions of clause 33 (3) also apply to posters displayed contrary to the provisions of the bylaws. Areas to be targeted for the removal of the notices are trees, traffic lights and Council assets.

Each confiscation will cost the placing party R100 for an unmounted poster, R500 per mounted poster and R1000 per fly poster. These charges are applicable from Monday to Friday. If the work is commissioned on a Saturday fifty (50) percent will be added to the normal fee while on Sundays an additional hundred (100) percent.

On 26 August 2005 a letter stipulating the conditions for the display of posters was sent to the IEC and all political parties contesting the elections.
