10 February 2006 Joburg Libraries psyched for Science Competition The City of Joburg Library and Information Services will launch the ''Joburg Libraries Psyched for Science'' Campaign on 16 February 2006. The aim of this Campaign is to create awareness and promote career education in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Learners throughout the City of Joburg will be given an opportunity to showcase their scientific and technological abilities by entering the Science Model building competition. The competition was run in 2005 and there were approximately 100 science models entries City wide. Entries included miniature hot air balloons, model trains, fans and robots. Winning models included a car, helicopter, a house, power station, air pump and an electronic truck. The 2006 Science Model competition targets learners from Grade 6 to Grade 12. Learners attending schools in any of the City's Regions are invited to part. Entry forms will be available at the City of Joburg public libraries. Learners are required to build a science model and register it under one of the following categories: Primary (grade 6 &7), Junior Secondary (grade 8&9) and Senior Secondary (grade 10 –12). Models will be adjudicated Regionally and one winner will be chosen in each of the 10 regions under each of the three categories. Regional winning models will be displayed at the main event during National Science Week, where overall winners will be selected from the three categories. From 16 to 18 May during National Science Week, Joburg Library and Information Services will bring together stakeholders such as, some of the City's Utilities and Agencies, Universities and other Science institutions for exhibitions, workshops as well as science demonstrations . Learners will get information on opportunities in the world of science as well as interacting with experts from these institutions. Learners are encouraged to take part in the 2006 competition by visiting the nearest library for entry forms and more information regarding the competition.
