15 August 2006 "TRIBUTE TO COURAGE" - CATALOGUE LAUNCH On Wednesday 16th August 2006 the Department of Arts, Culture and Heritage Services at the City of Johannesburg will launch the "Tribute to Courage" catalogue. It contains the works of twenty five artists living and working in Soweto. This catalogue grew out of the exhibition of the same title held last year as part of the Road to Arts Alive programme. The catalogue pays tribute to the resilience of this veteran group of independently self-sustaining artists, all above the age of 40 years. Soweto is reflected in all their artworks, which tell a wealth of stories, and are testimony to the courage and perseverance of these committed artists. The Director of Arts, Culture and Heritage Services, Mr. Steven Sack, who initiated the project says that "in publishing this catalogue, Arts, Culture and Heritage Services wishes to make the 'Tribute to Courage' exhibition and the artists it celebrates something we can take with us wherever we go". It is hoped that this catalogue will open doors for the participating artists, not just locally, but internationally as well. Artists involved in the project include Abe Mathabe, Anthony Nkotsi, Cyril Louw, Eric Mbatha, Gordon Gabashane, Jeff Zulu, Joe Ndlovu, Kenneth Nkosi, Monty Mahobe, Moshidi Mboya, Napo Kikine, Muzi Donga, Nathaniel Mokgosi, Percy Konqobe, Sthando Sondezi, Tau O.R. Qwelane, Barney Nkosi, Agrippa Nhlapo, Lungile Phambo, Peter Mazibuko, Isaac Magi, Charles Nkosi, Basil Baqwa, Vincent Baloyi, David Mbele, Osiah Masekoameng and Sipho Ndebele, Thulile Bengu, Linga Diko, and Ndweleni Ezekiel Budeli. The Catalogue will be launched at MuseuMAfricA, Bree Street, Newtown on the Wednesday 16 August at 12h00.
