JOBURG ABSA INDIGENOUS GAMES
The City of Johannesburg Sport and Recreation Department in partnership with ABSA will host the second citywide indigenous games at the Wembley Sports Complex on 23 September 2005.
Last year's Joburg Indigenous Games succeeded in reviving these games in the city, and 58 of the participants were selected for the Team Joburg Indigenous Games that represented the city at the Gauteng Provincial Games, held in Ekhululeni on 29 July 2005. Eight dibeke participants from the city proved to be the best in the country by bringing gold medals from the 2nd National Indigenous Games Festival held on 2 -3 September 2005 at Oudtshoorn, Western Cape. The city continues to celebrate and promote these games to ensure that they are passed from one generation to the other.
The Joburg ABSA Indigenous Games 2005 are aimed at celebrating our living heritage by bringing young and old generations together, so as to take pride in our games and promote the African Renaissance. Marimba and brass bands will welcome the participants in a true South African rhythm. Games to be played include dibeke, diketo, kgati, khokho, jukskei, sack race, tug of war and new additional games like legusha, musical chairs etc.
