Press Release
85th Remembrance Sunday
The 85th National Remembrance Sunday Service will be held on 13 November 2005 at the Cenotaph in Harrison Street, in Johannesburg starting at 14h00. The Remembrance Sunday Service contributes to unification and nation-building in South Africa. The service honours all South Africans who made the supreme sacrifice for their country in wars and conflict including the struggle for democracy.
Participants include the South African Defence Force, Freedom Regiments of the City of Johannesburg, and military veterans including the Military Veterans' Associations (MVAs) of Umkhonto we Size and the Azanian Peoples' Liberation Army. Also prominent are members of the diplomatic Corps who will be there to pay their respects.
An inter-faith religious service is led by representatives of different religious communities reflecting the diversity of South Africa. This year, for the first time, the Chief Rabbi of South Africa has been invited to lead the religious service. The inter-faith nature of the religious service will be respected, with emphasis on universal values shared by the major religions. Responsibility for leading the service will in future years be rotated in consultation with the South African Council of Churches or relevant religious body.
Yours sincerely
