Press Release

ILLEGAL MARCHERS ARRESTED

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) today arrested a significant number of marchers at the Beyers Naude Square in the center of Johannesburg.

The arrests came after the marchers started trashing the Central Business District (CBD) streets. The arrested marchers were then taken to the Johannesburg Central Police station to be formally charged. They will be charged with the contravention of the Gathering Act No. 205 of 1993.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department had given notice to the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) yesterday morning that the planned marches from that day until Friday, did not comply with procedures regulating marches. But they chose to ignore the rules, which had applied in their most recent march on July 12.

While the City acknowledges the right of any city to freely assembly but procedures and rules should be observed to ensure that similar rights of other citizens are not infringed.

The City once more appeals to the union leaders that while they conduct their protest against working conditions and related matters, this must be done in a manner that ensures safety of life, property and residents. Union leadership should discourage followers from participating and engaging in illegal activities like trashing the streets.

The City will continue to do all in its power to try and reduce serious harm to life and property but the greater responsibility lies with the union leadership.
