COUNCIL CONCERN ABOUT ILLEGAL MARCH
The City of Johannesburg has noted with concern a group of marchers to the Metropolitan Centre in Braamfontein.
The march has not complied with the rules governing marches in the city and therefore is illegal. However it is common course that people who engage in unlawful activity must face the wrath of the law.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department duly informed the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) this morning that the planned march does no comply but they chose to ignore the rules.
We therefore leave the responsibility of whatever unlawful action arising from this march to the hands of the trade union leadership. The city will not be in a position to advise either the Mayor or its senior officials to receive a memorandum or meet with people involved in an unlawful march.
Again we appeal to the union leaders to ensure safety of life, property and residents during this illegal march.
The City will do all in its power to try and reduce serious harm to life and property but the greater responsibility lies with the union leadership.
