Press Release
Court Ruling on the Pension Fund
The Supreme Court has ordered the City to honour a liability that was created by the former Johannesburg City Council (JCC). The former City Council as part of a sunset clause took a decision to pay pensioners of the two City Pension Funds, a thirteenth cheque or bonus as if they were lifetime employees.
The democratically elected leadership of Johannesburg decided to terminate this benefit on the basis of equity and sustainability.
The City is awaiting the written judgement from the judge in this matter, it will immediately take advice from its legal team and will immediately decide as to how to deal with this legacy of apartheid.
The City is committed to equity and transformation in the work place. The transformation agenda is about ridding this generation and future generations of apartheid liabilities that divert scarce resources towards meeting the selfish needs of a few.
