City Parks celebrates Arbor Week

Johannesburg City Parks (JCP) the greening, parks, cemetery and conservation managing agency in the City of Joburg in partnership with national departments, communities, schools, the 11 regions, environmental organizations, charities and various institutions will be celebrating Arbor Week by planting trees in Johannesburg. This is a concerted effort by City Parks and its partners to support a culture of greening to achieve a healthier quality of life for all our citizens.

"Too often planners and communities, overlook the long term benefits of trees and only see its aesthetic value. The theme for Arbor Week, 'plant a tree grow our future' underlines the impact and importance of plant and tree-life in the race for survival," says Luther Williamson, Managing Director of JCP.

Some of the benefits of trees include:

  • Reduction of air pollution and noise pollution
  • Climate improvement
  • Flood and erosion control
  • Energy saving
  • Water quality improvement
  • Wildlife habitat & biodiversity enhancement
  • Food and wood source
  • Traditional medicine

"Green cities are preferred cities, they attract investment and tourism and build a sense of community pride. More importantly these economic opportunities provide jobs. With the eradication of the alien plant invasion, much needed jobs were created in Johannesburg," added Williamson.

JCP is committed to making a sustainable contribution to our environment and to our economy, and calls on all residents to protect and nurture our heritage for our future and for the future of our children. ENDS.
