Press Release

Provision of bulk sanitation for Drieziek, Extensions 3 and 5

Johannesburg Water (Pty) Ltd, the water and sanitation provider for the City of Johannesburg, has embarked on a project to install new Bulk and Link Outfall Sewers for Drieziek, Orange Farm, South of Johannesburg.

This project is part of the Utility's overall investment programme aimed at improving service levels and provision of municipal services to previously disadvantaged communities. On completion, the project will have provided at least 23 000 people with access to a water borne sewer reticulation.

The Drieziek project will further ensure that the houses which are currently being built by the City of Johannesburg for the residents from the informal settlement, can be connected to the water borne sewerage system. This is an improvement from existing sanitation services which comprise of chemical toilets.

The project will also add to achieving commitments contained in the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, a document aimed at tracking deliverables emanating from the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002.

Construction work commenced on 4 April 2005 and the expected date of completion is October 2005. Approximately R12,000,000.00 has been invested in this three-part development. The first portion consists of the installation of a new 600mm diameter concrete sewer line over a distance of approximately 5,600m. The second portion consists of the jacking of a 1,200mm diameter concrete sewer line below the N1 freeway over 90m. The third portion of the project consists of the jacking of a 900mm diameter concrete sewer line below the R28 arterial road over a distance of 30m.3054 units will be accommodated in Extension 3, whilst 1,548 units will be accommodated in Extension 5.
