JW extends sanitation coverage in Johannesburg
The New Services Development Division of Johannesburg Water (Pty) Ltd, the water and sanitation provider for the City of Johannesburg, is in the process of installing basic water and sanitation services in various informal settlements throughout the City of Johannesburg. This project is part of the Utility's overall investment programme aimed at improving service levels and provision of municipal services to previously disadvantaged communities. This project will result in the upliftment of approximately 9000 households who previously had limited or no access to these services.
The areas to benefit are Miriting, Sweet Waters, Slovo Park, Lion Park, Itsoseng, Zandspruit, Lindhaven, Princess Plots and Dunusa (DRD Mine). The implementation of this project is considered a temporary solution until the settlements are formalized or relocated to formalized areas where higher service levels can be provided.
The communities contribute to the project by excavating their own pits for the toilets. This contribution results in higher ownership and responsibility towards the project and infrastructure. Construction of the toilets and water reticulation are done using labor-based construction methods. All the labor required for the projects are obtained from the local communities.
Work on the project has already commenced and expected completion is mid-March 2006. R44, 000, 000. 00 was made available for this project where different consultants and contractors were employed to look over the entire project.
Johannesburg Water is committed to continuously striving towards improving services throughout the City to make Johannesburg Africa's World Class City.
