GET ready for an early, snowy Christmas at the Johannesburg Zoo's annual event. For three days in July you can pull on your winter boots and gloves and enjoy 300 tons of snow.
There will also be a Christmas tree full of sparkling lights, camel rides, the monthly Zoo Zig Zag run/walk, and lots of "hot chocolate and scrummy winter food". The fun is planned for July 13-15.
A 40m by 12m bum boarding slope is to be created at the Zoo, constructed and managed by experts from South Africa's only ski resort, Tiffindell, in the Eastern Cape, on the border with Lesotho. Tiffindell gets a sprinkling of snow each year, but relies largely on snow machines, which spurt out a steady stream of snow over their single 500-metre slope during winter.
"There will be snow in which to build snowmen, snow to throw at your kid brother or sister, and simply tons of snow just to provide a winter wonderland for you and the rest of the family," according to a Zoo statement.
In addition, there will be a live broadcast by Radio 702 from the polar bear enclosure on Saturday morning, July 13.
In the build-up to the weekend, on Friday evening there will be a Corporate Challenge Potjie Competition. Companies are invited to book a site and "fire up your coals and your imagination", and the winning team will be given a medal. You can raid your MD's cupboard, or bring your Armani jacket, to be judged in the Best Dressed Snowman competition.
The Zoo gates open at 9am on Saturday and close at 9pm on each of the three days. Entrance to the Zoo is R20 for adults and R15 for children under 12, and pensioners. Activities will be individually priced.
