Who is eligible for a city old age home?
To be admitted to an old age home owned by the city, you must provide an identity document and proof that you are on pension. Residents are also required to join a burial society. "Some of the old people we admit don't have families. We therefore need to protect them against all eventualities," explains Dikhoba.

Services for the aged

THE Johannesburg area has many homes that cater for the elderly, the frail and the mentally disturbed. Some of the homes accommodate only the elderly, while others cater for all the categories. Others, such as the Park Care Centre in Parktown, even admit non-pensioners and the homeless.

All the homes listed below receive a subsidy from the Gauteng provincial government's Social Development Department. The subsidy is based on the number of residents that a particular home accommodates and the plan that they present to the government. The department gives out the subsidies on a three-monthly basis subject to a review of the home's activities.

The criteria for admission are similar for many of the homes. You have to be 60 years of age if you are a woman and 65 years in the case of a man to be considered for admission. In almost all the homes, a pensioner has to pay a monthly fee for boarding and lodging.

In many cases this is calculated at a certain percentage of a pensioner's total monthly income. Other homes, however, charge a monthly flat rate based on the pensioner's condition, whether he or she is capable of looking after him/herself, while a few also take into consideration the pensioner's financial situation.

All of the homes listed below are private initiatives of organisations such as churches and not-for-profit organisations like the Johannesburg Association for the Aged.
