THE City of Johannesburg, has approved two marches by 17 organisations at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Sandton on Saturday. One will be a march by groups largely supportive of the summit agenda; the other by groups largely opposed to it.
Members of the 17 organisations, which all applied separately for the right to demonstrate, will now march either under the auspices of the Social Movements Indaba (opposed to the summit), or the Civil Society Management (largely supportive).
"We have approved all applications received for marches following consultations with the organisers of the protests," said executive mayor Amos Masondo, who added that the demonstrations would be carried out in accordance with the regulations of the Gatherings Act.
Approval has been granted through the Metro Police Department, bearing in mind the rights and security considerations of other individuals, businesses, summit delegates and visiting heads of state.
The City and the protest organisers have agreed on the following conditions for the marches:
- Both the Social Movements Indaba and the Civil Society Management will use a similar route from Alexandra for their marches.
- The Social Movements Indaba's march will leave from Bheki Langa High School in East Bank, Alexandra, at 10am, while the Civil Society Management demonstrators will depart at noon from Alexandra Stadium.
- The two groups of marchers must be separated by a two-kilometre distance and will not be allowed to use the Grayston Drive interchange.
- The organisations are required to provide one visibly identifiable marshall per 10 marchers.
The nine-kilometre marches will proceed from Alexandra to the Old Pretoria Road. They will then approach Catherine Avenue from Marlboro Avenue. The marchers will then go down Alice Lane where they will stop at the corner of 5th Street to be addressed by speakers from the organisations staging the protests.
