THE World Summit on Sustainable Development is rapidly emerging as a hot-spot for convergence by science and technology experts from around the world, with dedicated science forum events running parallel to the Summit from 26 August to 4 September.
The Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development is an initiative of the South African government - at the request of Nitin Desai, Secretary-General of the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development - in collaboration with a number of international partners.
The Forum takes place at the Ubuntu Village in Johannesburg, and attendance is free. The objective of the event is to provide a platform for dialogue among top scientists from around the world to highlight the critical contributions of science, technology and innovation to sustainable development.
In addition, a Pretoria leg of the Science Forum is being planned as "Science at the Summit", set to take place from 26 to 30 August at the CSIR Conference Centre.
The conference has drawn both local and international speakers on topics which encompass a range of science and technology disciplines, as well as sociologists, ethicists, historians, philosophers, linguists, communicators and concerned groups.
Women in Science
Women in Science will set the pace, with the Third World Organisation for Women in Science kicking off the forum on Monday 26 August at the Ubuntu Village.
Issues to be discussed include the contribution of women scientists in establishing the social contract between science and society, and the role of women in building partnerships with stakeholders at all levels of society.
The Science Forum events are organised by the Department of Science and Technology in association with partners such as the International Council for Science, the Third World Academy of Science, the World Federation of Engineering Organisations, and local science bodies the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Foundation for Education, Science and Technology (FEST).
A South Africa/European Commission-led event where the issues of science, teghnology and innovation for sustainable development will be debated, will take place on 2 and 3 September at the Ubuntu Village at the Wanderers in Illovo.
