JOHANNESBURG'S World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) has attracted the largest-ever turnout at a UN conference, with 190 countries represented and 104 heads of state expected.
Some 16 000 delegates have arrived so far for the main conference, and more are arriving each day, said US spokesperson Sue Markham. "We are happy with the smooth-running negotiations and the constructive spirit amongst the various countries to reach agreements around the issues tabled," she said.
"We have records of 7 118 delegates, 5 802 representatives from the nine
major groups and 2 932 media," she said.
"We are expecting more delegations from a number of countries, including the
United States of America, India and Chad," Markham confirmed.
