Message from the Executive Mayor, Amos Masondo

August 23, 2002

WE are proud and honoured to be hosting the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development.

The Summit is important in that it holds the promise of a better future for the world. It will address the environmental and development challenges such as access to clean water and sanitation, energy generation, provision of health services, promoting agriculture and food security and managing the biodiversity within ecosystems.

These are issues that the City of Johannesburg is constantly engaging. The Summit will provide many opportunities for our country to be part of critical debates and to learn valuable lessons from the discussions. We have the opportunity also to use this momentum to intensify our local government programmes well beyond the Summit.

The summit is expected to contribute R1,3 billion to the national economy, from which the city stands to gain about R1 billion. Furthermore, it is expected that about 14000 jobs will be created and that the city’s tourism will be boosted considerably.

The decisions taken at the Johannesburg Summit will remain in the minds of people for many decades, for humanity will have gathered here and emerged with meaningful solutions to preserve our planet for future generations.

Today we can proudly say that Johannesburg is ready to host this important occasion. Thank you for all your efforts and patience during the preparations.

The eyes of the world are upon us.

Let us join hands and extend a warm welcome to all delegates and Heads of State visiting our vibrant Africa city. Let us wish them fruitful deliberations and a memorable stay.
