The City department manages five museums as well as the Johannesburg Art Gallery. There are also several community arts centres in Joburg's townships - in Soweto and Alexandra.
Some centres are arts-related but managed by other departments. For example, recreation centres, where arts are taught, are managed by the local department of social development.
Also, the City wants to strengthen the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage collections and built assets. Increasing access to services and programmes is included in its vision.
Through its service delivery commitments, the City aims to increase the number of visitors to museums, cultural activities and other social activities. It is hoped that such an increase will ensure maximum participation by the public.
The targeted groups for participation will deal with the needs of the youth, previously disadvantaged communities and people with disabilities. Impoverished communities like Alexandra, Westbury and Orange Farm are expected to benefit from some of the projects that will be run.
- Attracting previously disadvantaged communities to museums and galleries, as well as training and developing these communities;
- Repositioning the sector as a major contributor to the city's economic growth;
- Developing and training arts students from disadvantaged communities;
- Ensuring that the arts and culture as an economic sector play a role in fighting poverty; and
- Supporting the role played by the friends of various museums and supporting the interests of art lovers, collectors and tourists.
