JOBURG is marking the thousand-day countdown to the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ with an Afrikaans music concert on Newtown on Saturday, 15 September.
Hoezit 2010 will feature some of South Africa's most popular Afrikaans musicians including Dozi, Amanda Strydom, Brendan October, Jennifer Jones and Anton Goosen. Set to mark the official 1 000 day countdown to the football World Cup, the concert is being hosted by the City, the Johannesburg Development Agency, the Newtown Management District and ATKV, an organisation that promotes Afrikaans culture.

"Hoezit 2010 represents the City's aim to broaden its arts and culture offering to a more diverse audience, not only for the concert but for a long time thereafter," said Joburg's spokesperson, Nthatise Modingoane. "The [City] is proud to be supporting such an initiative."
At noon, the countdown will be led by KykNET personality Elana Afrika, who will also be the master of ceremonies. The concert, to be held at Mary Fitzgerald Square, will start at 10am.
"This is a milestone event where, as the country, we celebrate and tell the world that we are ready and will host a successful World Cup in 2010," said Tim Modise, the chief communications and marketing officer at the Local Organising Committee.
Also billed to perform is girl band Shine4, Tiro, Soweto String Quartet, Bushrock Band, Rubber Soles, Johnny Dooper, Afrika Mammas, DNA Strings, the multi-cultural Lekgoa and the Anglo Gold Ashanti Choir.
"Hoezit 2010 has an historical significance which may go a long way in uniting our fragmented society, not only in Johannesburg but beyond the parameters of the city," said Coenie de Villiers, the executive director of culture at ATKV.

The Newtown Management District has ensured that there will be tight security and secure parking during the concert.
"We expect people to come in numbers to the concert and celebrate the progress the country has made so far," Modise said.
