Performers
invited to audition

Newtown's Diwali Festival is a month away and auditions are being held on Sunday for singers and dancers to take part in the annual event.

AUDITIONS are being held on Sunday, 30 September for dancers and singers to take part in this year's Newtown Diwali Festival.

The auditions run from 10am to 3pm at Easwarar Temple Hall in Lenasia South. Organisers called in June for performers to apply to audition. "We are holding these auditions to identify groups," said Nisha Moodley, the festival director. "We don't want to duplicate genres on the big day."

She explained that the organisers hoped to have a variety of groups and performers.

Diwali is a Hindu celebration known as the festival of lights. It is recognised around the world by millions of people and marks the beginning of the Hindu new year. Diwali stands for peace, harmony and the triumph of light over darkness.

Joburg's celebrations take place in Newtown on Saturday, 27 October. It is supported by the City of Johannesburg.

In applying to audition, groups had to give a brief explanation of their item, its genre and the duration of their performance.

"Even though applications closed at the end of July, we still want to see many groups and organisations taking part in the auditions," Moodley said. "Organisations can pitch up on Sunday even if they haven't applied before."

Auditions for the day slot start at 10am; cultural and community groups will audition.

October's Diwali Festival will be filled with music, dance, art, craft and food. There will be an esoteric fair at Museum Africa and children's activities, a mini-market, and an evening street party are also planned.
