THE award-winning Schubert Ensemble will be in Johannesburg next month, after taking its talents to more than 40 other countries.

Comprising of Simon Blendis, Douglas Paterson, Jane Salmon and William Howard playing violin, viola, cello and piano respectively, the British quartet will perform at the Linder Auditorium, on the University of the Witwatersrand's education campus in Parktown, on Sunday, 7 October.

They will play Mendelssohn's Piano Quartet in F Minor, Brahms's Piano Quartet Number One and Sequenza Notturna by the contemporary British composer, Martin Butler.

Founded in 1983, the Schubert Ensemble won the Best Chamber Ensemble award from the Royal Philharmonic Society in 1998. It has performed to critical acclaim on stages from New York to Tokyo, and gives over 60 concerts a year. In all, it has performed in more than 40 countries and appears frequently at major British festivals and concerts, such as the Aldeburgh Festival, the English Music Festival and Garsington Opera.

Apart from performing live around the globe, the quartet has established a reputation for innovation in music and education. Its vision in combining the two led to a groundbreaking national project, called Chamber Music 2000.

The Schubert Ensemble is performing on Sunday, 7 October at the Linder Auditorium, on the University of the Witwatersrand's education campus in Parktown. The show starts at 5pm and tickets, ranging in price from R25 to R120, can be booked at Computicket outlets, on 083 915 8000 or online on the Computicket website.
