RAISE your voice against crime at two concerts being held to help make the streets of Joburg crime free.
Working with Eblockwatch and Childline Gauteng, rock band Watershed is performing at the CommUnity Concert on Saturday, 29 September, from 2pm until 7pm, at the Dimension Data campus in Bryanston.
Watershed leads a line-up that includes Skwatta Kamp and Son of 1000 Blues. The hosts are comedians David Newton and Loyiso Gola.
Eblockwatch is a community project that strives to fight crime by providing members with information about crime and empowering its members using technology.
To join the initiative, SMS the word "Watershed" to 33930 and follow the prompts. You will receive a speed dial number, your community button, that you can save on your phone and use when you are in trouble. It costs R10 a month.
Childline Gauteng will receive R1 for every registration. Lynne Cawood, the director of Childline Gauteng, applauds the community initiative, which should give parents some peace of mind through technology and enable children to connect to loved ones if they are in trouble.
"This initiative helps to prevent crime and ensures that our rainbow nation's children do not have to experience horrible happenings."
According to the Childline SA website, the organisation trains Childline staff and volunteers and other professionals who work with children like prosecutors and police. The national body helps with policy development, changing laws and policies protecting children, does offender profiling, and victim and offender rehabilitation.

Childline Gauteng runs the Sunlight Safe House, a crisis line, training in child rights and responsibilities, and a clinical team.
The crisis line is a 24-hour counselling service for children under the age of 18 over the phone and through its website. The toll-free Childline number is 08000 55 555.
Joburgers are urged to bring along their picnic baskets and camping chairs and help to make a difference. Tickets are R120 per person at Computicket.
But that's not the only anti-crime concert in the city. It is followed by an event at Montecasino Piazza titled You're the Voice, on Monday, 1 October.
A press release explains that the aim behind the concert is "to raise money and public consciousness, through the awesome power of music".
More than 150 artists will perform, backed by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, including Joseph Clarke, Andre Schwartz, Loyiso Bala, Mara Louw and the casts of the musicals Rent, We Will Rock You, Girl Talk 007 and Hairspray.
Tickets range from R150 to R250 each and are available at Computicket. All proceeds will go to the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation.
