THE temples of Taiwan, whose architecture tells the story of the island's culture, are the subject of an exhibition at the Johannesburg Public Library.
Titled Taiwan's rich and fascinating cultural heritage, the exhibition forms part of Heritage Month celebrations by Region F's library services unit. Set up in the library's foyer, it runs from Monday, 17 September to Saturday, 22 September.
The unit's library services manager for outreach and marketing, Maria Digoamaje, says the main purpose of the exhibition is to improve relations between people of different cultures. It falls under the City's strategic objective to deal with xenophobia.
Included in the exhibition are costume displays, photographs of Taiwanese temples, traditional festivals, arts and dance, and screenings of Taiwanese documentaries and feature films.

"We are going to show South Africans the rich culture of Taiwan," says Eric Chao, the information officer at the Taipei Liaison Office in South Africa.
It will enable people to learn more about Taiwanese culture and encourage them to discuss issues raised in the films, Digoamaje says. She also believes that the exhibition will help to build an audience for Taiwanese films.
And it will reinforce the relationship between Region F's library services unit and the Taipei Liaison Office. "The Taiwanese have always opened their arms for us," she says.
From the main library, the exhibition will travel to the Rhodes Park Library in Kensington, where it will run from Tuesday, 25 September to Saturday, 29 September.
