ONCE again Joburgers will be celebrating their culture and heritage under a spring sky, while being entertained by some of the hottest names in South African music, at the Joburg Day music festival.
Radio station 94.7 Highveld Stereo and Santam, the insurance company, are driving the day-long concert as part of Heritage Month, at the Randburg Sports Complex, in the northern suburb, on Saturday, 15 September.
The first Joburg Day was held in 2004; last year almost 12 000 people attended and a record crowd is expected this year. A diverse line-up is on the bill and performers include Watershed, Mango Groove, Jamali and Freshlyground.
"Local music has literally exploded in the past decade, with hundreds of extremely talented musicians emerging every year," says Ravi Naidoo, the Highveld station manager.
The radio station has a long history of promoting local artists, he says, and is committed to showcasing local music. It does this through its play list and features like Julio Garcia's Homebrew show.
"Joburg Day is an extension of [our] commitment to promote local artists. We are proudly South African and proud of South African music."
The venue is safe and there will be food and refreshment stalls, although people are welcome to bring along their own picnic baskets. Plenty of entertainment has been lined up to keep children busy, including art and crafts, sand art, face painting, carousels, jumping castles and wall climbing.
Gates open at 8.30am and the concert kicks off at 10.30am, ending at 7pm. Secure parking is available free of charge at the Randburg Cricket, Hockey and Harriers Club as well as at Diggers Rugby Club. No alcohol, bottles, glass containers or gas or charcoal braais will be allowed.
Tickets cost R150 each and are available at Computicket outlets, on 083 915 8000 or through the Computicket website. Tickets for children under the age of 12 are R50 and can only be bought at the gate on the day.
