LATINO crooner Julio Iglesias will join the seven-times Tour de France winner, cyclist Lance Armstrong, at the Night of the Stars charity concert.
The concert, on Thursday, 8 November at the Coca-Cola Dome in northern Joburg, is an annual charity benefit attended by well-known public figures.
Armstrong, born Lance Edward Gunderson, will share some of his memories and highlights of his sporting career. He is an international road-racing cyclist who won the gruelling Tour de France seven times in a row - from 1999 to 2005.
He has a number of other accolades under his belt, including Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year in 1992, ABC's Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year, and Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
The cyclist started his sporting career as a triathlete, competing and winning in adult competitions from the age of 12. Since then he has become a household name. In addition to his seven Tour de France wins, Armstrong has won 22 individual stages of the race, 11 time trials and his team has won the team time trial on three occasions.
He survived a battle with cancer in 1996, which led him to found the Lance Armstrong Foundation. He has since retired from competitive cycling and now focuses on the foundation, a cancer advocacy group.
Bringing a bit of musical magic to the evening, Iglesias will perform some of his popular hits, including songs from the Latin album Un Hombre Solo. In a long career, the Grammy Award winner has performed duets with Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross. He sings in English and Spanish.
Emerging Italian artist Nicola Congui will also perform.
The Night of the Stars is on Thursday, 8 November at the Coca-Cola Dome. Tickets are R379 each; corporate tables range from R15 000 to R55 000 a table.
All proceeds will go to the Star Skills Development Organisation, the African Children's Feeding Scheme and the Topsy Aids Foundation. For more information email thira@avantage.co.za or call 082 653 8161.
