Words and music
from Promusica

Music and recitals are on the cards at the Joburg Promusica Theatre, with gypsy music and poetry planned for this weekend.

October 12, 2007

By Lesego Madumo

JOBURG Promusica will stage the first of a series of cocktail concerts this weekend, titled Spotlight.

The concert is on Sunday, 14 October and starts at 6.30pm. According to Weiss Doubell, the artistic director, with this concert his company plans to return to a tradition begun in the 1980s.

"This concert's focus is a recitation of the works of the great literary masters, and music with fire in its veins … [it] is the first in a series of intimate concerts with different themes to suit any taste and preference."

Actor Louis van Niekerk will give a recital of works of Dirk Opperman, Uys Krige, Van Wyk Louw, Dylan Thomas, TS Eliot and William Shakespeare. Violinist Miroslav Chakaryan and pianist Jacob Swart will perform classical gypsy music "which will fill the air and make you want to tap your feet and even get up to dance". Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen and the Hora Staccato by Dinescu/Heifetz will be performed.

"It is a pleasure to announce the re-launch of this special offering and to provide the audience with an opportunity to view the stage from the other side … With Spotlight, patrons can look forward to the continuation of this quality offering, set behind the fire curtain – experiencing it all from the other side of the orchestra pit."

During the Spotlight concert, musicians and audience sit on the stage. In addition to the entertainment, there will be a light buffet and wine in a French bistro style.

Booking is essential and seats are limited. Tickets are R150 each, covering the performance, a glass of wine and food. More wine is on sale. The concert comes after the company revamped its theatre and launched its new corporate identity in September.

Joburg Promusica houses an opera company, orchestra, opera chorus and undertakes tuition schemes; it is funded by the City.

Joburg Promusica Theatre is on Christiaan de Wet Road in Florida Park, Roodepoort, in western Johannesburg. For more information or assistance with bookings, contact Nico at the Theatre on 011 674 1357/8 or visit the Joburg Promusica website.
