Goggas are in the spotlight

The theme this year for the annual Yebo Gogga Yebo amaBlomo exhibition is Ubuntu in nature, and partnerships in nature will be explored.

CREEPY crawlies are again the stars of the show at the University of the Witwatersrand's Life Science Museum, which is hosting the annual Yebo Gogga exhibition.

The exhibition opens on Wednesday, 10 October and runs until Sunday, 14 October. Entrance is free, and school groups and the members of the public are expected to attend.

Yebo Gogga Yebo amaBlomo is aimed at educating the public about the life and environment of bees, ants, worms, spiders, scorpions and other bugs, animals and plants.

This year's theme is Ubuntu in nature. "The theme [was] chosen to expose the partnership between men and plants, insects and animals," said Cheryl Dehning, one of the Wits organisers.

Visitors will be able to touch, feel and interact with live bugs, plants and animals. "The exhibition is aimed at everyone but most importantly at school children to [teach them] about the wonderful world of plants and insects."

Various organisations will take part, including Free Me, the Spider Club, Tree Society, Bee Keepers' Association, various Wits departments, Melville Koppies and the Agricultural Research Council.

There will be school group tours, colouring and identifying insects, plants and animals in specially designed workbooks. "The workbooks are specially designed for this exhibition and children will learn through colouring and other activities," Dehning said.

For those who prefer animal and insect artefacts, there will be a flea market. "The market will feature wire animals, pot plants, honey products, herbs and ornaments."

The exhibition is from Wednesday, 10 October until Sunday, 14 October at the Life Science Museum at the University of the Witwatersrand, Oppenheimer Life Sciences Building. Doors open at 9am and close at 4pm on weekdays and open at 10am and close at 4pm on weekends.
